kungfufighting: (gojyo finger)
I have to say, my seminar group irritates me more and more each day.  There are a lot of smart people with a lot of dead-on comments that are worth hearing... and then there are the rest.  Some have made huge, gross assumptions about Japanese culture and can't let go of the fantasy that Heian women must have been chained and locked in dungeons underneath the earth.  A few love to make blanket statements about adultery, saying that any man who cheats on his wife is forever to blame for anything that she does to him, but the converse would be justifiable (a woman cheating on her husband).

Why do so many people feel the need to dehumanize adulterers?  It's amazingly naive of people to claim that all partners who cheat are bad.  It's simply not that black and white.  And I'm actually most irritated by the fact that men are unfairly branded as an unfaithful sex.  I've known many a woman who cheated on her partner.

You can go on about human nature, male sex drive, whatever - in a committed relationship, I firmly believe that cheating has little to nothing to do with those things.  It's a symptom of bigger problems in most cases.

Hey, I've been cheated on.  I know how it feels.  I also know that I was just as big a part of the reason why he cheated as his own desires were.  We made each other miserable.

Oof, I didn't mean to go on like that.  Long story short, my class spends more time talking about this junk than the pieces we're reading.  For a lit class - that's just sad.  But I'm picking up a lot of fun stuff about Japanese history, and we get a poetry lecture tomorrow, which I'm excited about.
