kungfufighting: (dumbledore's face)
So, upon hearing that the new book in the Twilight series has been received somewhat poorly so far, I went over to Wikipedia to see if a summary was up yet.  And oh, it is.  Highlights include:

So, my sweet young adolescent sisters out there, remember Stephenie Meyer's words of advice - Yes, your vampire boyfriend/husband can certainly make you a vampire AND give you a baby as well, since he has special magical sperm chock full of preservatives.  However, said baby will break your bones from the inside, so keep an eye on that.

All excellent goals for the age of 18.  Married - check.  Vampire - check.  Baby - Check.

What I find the most interesting about this whole thing is the aforementioned backlash from the readers, particularly the non 14-year old set.  This review was one in particular that I took notice of, since it came from someone who enjoyed the books, but was shocked by the consequence-free ending.  The many pages of comments agreeing with the reviewer are also notable.

Here's the thing - I read silly books.  I do.  I've read and enjoyed probably several books at the same level of silliness as these things.  For God's sake, Anne Bishop writes books about magical cock rings, and I own every one of them.  But when you combine ridiculous plot points with messages for teenage girls like 'Physical Abuse Is Okay If You Say It Is," "Marriage And A Baby At 18 Is The Way To Go," and "Have The Baby - He'll Come Around,"  then I have a problem.

The huge amount of negative reviews from self-proclaimed die-hard series fans over at Amazon.com speak for themselves.  The thing that Meyer lacks above everything else is a good editor who is willing to tell her when she's crossed the line.
