I truly have to thank Stephenie Meyer someday, perhaps in letter form, because her Twilight books have now become one of my top ten sources of entertainment on the Internet. Well, not the books themselves. But the talking about the books. Reading the bad reviews and hilarious LJ entries makes my day.
I thought about why this makes me so happy earlier, and I think part of it is that I enjoy any backlash that is related to someone who is referred to as the next J.K. Rowling. Now, I love me some Harry Potter. You all know this. But it happened to Rowling, and no one acknowledged it - power drunkenness. YA series nowadays seem to be released not because they're good, but because they are the most likely to make money. And because fantasy/sci-fi is the new "it" genre, most of these books have some element of the supernatural thrown in to make them sell even more. Of course, the more popular the series gets, the faster the new books have to come out, and the less likely they are to be edited properly. This new Twilight book is the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel example of that.
I am very forgiving when it comes to books. I mean, if any of you think I'M picky, you should wander a bookstore with Aleph sometime. But a successful book is not necessarily a good book. And writers who take advantage of their lucky success to become even lazier with subsequent offerings make me roll my eyes. Deus Ex Machina babies do not fix a bad plot, EVER.
Shall we talk about some good books? Let's.
I had Kate Forsyth recommended to me a while ago, and as soon as I visited her website and discovered that she was also a Juliet Marillier fan, I was in like flint. I picked up her first book in the Witches of Eileanan series, and I am so far not disappointed. A land where witchcraft has been outlawed, Scottish based history, and a main female character whom I love so far? I am full of enjoy.
I am both sleepy and hungry. Which will win? Who knows.
