I'm halfway through Eclipse now, and I've finally pinpointed the thing that makes these books not just irritating and silly, but downright bad.
Bella talks exactly like an abused wife. Edward governs her entire life, never letting her be alone, watching her sleep, having her followed, etc. His language towards her is always patronizing, always talking down to her. And this is just by Book 3. In the 4th, I have it on good authority that she gets to enjoy some extremely violent sex after which counting her bruises becomes her new favorite pastime.
It seems like Jacob is the voice of reason, somewhat. He keeps asking her why she thinks it's okay that he controls her so much, and she always responds with a joke or dismisses his concerns, saying something about how it's for her own protection.
All of this hits me the wrong way. If I have a daughter someday, this is the last shit I want her reading. Obsession and utter devotion is not real love, and the whole thing is just sick.
Speaking as someone who's been in relationships like that and came out damaged and depressed for months and years afterwards, it's painful to read. There were a lot of triggers for me, and it got me really upset last night.
Anyways.
We bought a new car! We got the red Toyota Yaris that we'd been wanting - paid so very much for it, yes, but this time it's really worth it. It's a 2008, automatic, full stereo, less than 50 thousand miles on it - super duper cute.
And I named it already. The Yaris is basically the decendant of the Tercel, and since our old red Toyota Tercel was named Diana as in Wonder Woman, I've suggested we name the new Yaris Donna, as in Donna Troy, Wonder Girl. Cause Donna was made from part of Diana.
Admit it, Aleph. You love me. :P
