Whenever some acronym or term comes along to do with Internet fandoms and I don't know what it means, it makes me EXTREMELY happy.
I like being an anime fan without being in any fandoms. Do you all see what I'm saying? I probably don't make much sense. I just like the things I like without involving myself in any Internet-related aspects of the thing. This way, I don't have to deal with anyone else's interpretations of the thing that I like, and I don't have to care whether it's popular or not.
I'm not saying I never look at fanart or read fanfiction. It's just very, very rare. And I don't bother at all with communities or forums. But terms eventually make their way into my brain, usually through fandomsecrets. And when I learn them, then I get squicked. Like how CSI apparently doesn't mean the show CSI, but Crazy Space Incest, ex. River and Simon.
(oh my god - for a second, I forgot Simon's name, and I kept thinking Steve. I'm calling him Steve from now on.)
Not to bash anyone that does... I just feel better this way.
The less Internet, the better.
(By the way, any non-geek points that I might get for avoiding fandom have been soundly crushed by the fact that I spent many hours last night and several here at work tonight researching local RenFaires and costumes. I never thought I'd go there, I really didn't. I think my desperation to be taken out in a pretty dress has reached new pathetic heights.)
