god, i hate tuesdays.
May. 20th, 2008 10:07 pmI am completely and thoroughly bored. I very much wanted to work with my LibraryThing, but the site is down for maintenance. I was so eager that I decided to give the new app through Google Books a try, but I hate it. I'm rather picky about which version I'm adding to my shelves, and it doesn't allow for that at all. I prefer that the cover image match the actual book I have in case I'm trying to find it or something like that.
So, I've been trying to figure out just what it is that appeals so very much about the Twilight books to so many people. The consensus seems to be that Meyer is good at characterizing high schoolers and creating situations that teenagers can relate to.
However - these books are also about vampires. And they, apparently... sparkle. In the sun.
This leads me to think that while she may be able to relate to the younguns well, Meyer should realize that she is not capable of writing a decent fantasy novel and start veering more towards the general YA fiction genre.
I know I'm coming to this from a nerd perspective, and I know that I'm snobby about many things, fantasy novels included. But to market this book as a fantasy novel when the author so clearly has never done any kind of research past watching Interview With The Vampire is quite annoying to those of us who like our fantasy/sci-fi at a certain level of decent.
This is further proven when you look at Meyer's description of her new "sci-fi" book, The Host, on her website. The blurb is titled, "Science fiction for people who don't like science fiction."
No.
If you cannot manage to adhere to the simple notion, which even 7 year olds could relate to you, that vampires CANNOT GO OUT IN THE SUN, or if you cannot understand that THERE IS NO SCI-FI FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE SCI-FI, then you should stop writing books in any format but Sweet Valley High. That is it.
I will leave you with some of my favorite "review comments" that I found on Shelfari about Twilight:
'u wnt edward to stay wth bella; i hate that jacob dude; im scared he'll break them up!'
'if i was in the story i would try to help bella she happens to spent alot time on her own when ever edward is away i would be her awesome goth friend like raven from Vampire Kisses'
'This book is far from junk. It's the best!! I can't sum it up in words. I was never able to get interested in books but Twilight was the start of my reading LIFE!!'
You're welcome.
