yellow has a whole new meaning
Sep. 2nd, 2009 02:14 pmI've been re-reading bunches of historical fiction to keep myself busy during this break from school, as I think I've mentioned before. I devoured the Little House and the Anne of Green Gables books in one week - I wish now that I hadn't let my mother give away my copies when I was a teenager and 'too old' for such books.
I also have a bunch of books on my iPod downloaded to the Stanza app. Most of them are from public domain sites, that kind of thing. I do that so I can read in bed while Meridan plays his DS. In previous weeks, I was working my way through the Oz books. Last week, it was Little Women. I'd forgotten how preachy and slightly irritating that book is. Enjoyable, sure, but a bit much for my tastes.
After I finished that one, I decided to try Gone With The Wind. I've only seen bits of the movie. Figured it wouldn't hurt.
OH DEAR GOD THE RACISM OH GOD OH GOD I DON'T KNOW HOW I FINISHED IT OH THE HORROR.
You can't even take it in the manner that it might just be Scarlett's point of view that's terribly racist, not the author herself. No, there are lengthy off-track monologues attempting to justify slavery, racism, and even THE KLAN. And, it's the longest book ever, and it takes forever to finish, and it just sucks. And Scarlett is the worst character ever.
I could go on. But I won't. Just... don't read that book, if you haven't yet. EVER.
Sigh.
